Home Maintenance & Repairs
Clogged Drains, Stubborn Stains, Musty Odors
Clogged Drain
A slow-draining sink or shower is a common issue that can arise during a house sit, especially in homes where buildup has gone unnoticed. If you find water pooling in the sink or shower, don’t panic—there are a few simple steps you can take to clear the clog before it becomes a bigger problem.
Start by running hot water down the drain to see if it helps break up any minor blockages. If the drain is still slow, try pouring half a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar down the drain. Let it sit for about 15 minutes before flushing with more hot water. This natural solution can often dissolve grease and minor clogs without the need for harsh chemicals.
If the problem persists, using a plunger or a drain snake may help dislodge stubborn debris. Be mindful of any standing water in the sink or tub, as it may indicate a deeper blockage. If multiple drains in the house are slow, it could be a sign of a more significant plumbing issue, in which case it’s best to notify the homeowner rather than attempt a major fix yourself.
A proactive approach to minor plumbing issues can prevent bigger headaches later, ensuring both you and the homeowner enjoy a smooth house-sitting experience.
Lifting a Stubborn Stain
For tough stains—whether from pets, spilled drinks, or mystery marks left behind—a combination of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda can work wonders. This method is especially effective for carpets, upholstery, and even some hard surfaces.
Step 1: Blot and Remove Surface Residue
If the stain is fresh, blot (don’t rub) with a clean cloth or paper towel to remove excess moisture. If it’s an old stain, lightly dampen the area with warm water to help loosen it.
Step 2: Apply a Baking Soda Base
Sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the stain. Baking soda helps absorb odors and begins breaking down the stain.
Step 3: Add Hydrogen Peroxide & Dish Soap
Mix 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of mild dish soap. Pour this mixture slowly over the baking soda, allowing it to bubble and penetrate the stain. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes.
Step 4: Scrub and Blot
Using a soft brush or cloth, gently scrub the area in circular motions. Then, blot up excess liquid with a dry towel.
Step 5: Let Dry and Vacuum
Allow the area to dry completely, then vacuum up any remaining baking soda. This should leave the spot clean and fresh.
For extra-stubborn stains, repeating the process or leaving the baking soda overnight before vacuuming can enhance results. Always test a small, hidden area first to ensure the solution won’t damage the material.

Cat is wary
A cat is wary and keeps its distance.
Let the cat approach you on its terms. Offer a slow “cat kiss” by blinking slowly at them. This mimics a cat’s natural way of showing trust and can help the cat feel more comfortable with you over time.

Environment & Cleanliness
Bug deterrents, Odor management, Stale air
Natural Bug Deterrent
Discovered bugs on the bed, sofa, or soft furnishings during your house sit? A simple DIY spray using water, vinegar, and cloves can help deter pests naturally. Vinegar’s strong scent disrupts insects, while cloves contain eugenol, a known bug repellent.
Natural Clove Solution:
- Scatter whole cloves in problem areas
- Quick Spray Recipe:
- 300-400ml water
- 10-15 drops clove essential oil
- 1 tsp rubbing alcohol or vinegar (helps oils mix)
- Optional: Add tea tree or lavender oil for stronger effect
- Shake well, spray lightly around entry points and hiding spots
- Reapply daily as needed
When to contact homeowners: For serious infestations, persistent problems, or before using commercial products.
Regular maintenance: Vacuum frequently (especially beds and furniture), empty vacuum outside immediately.
Musty or Dirty Sock Odour
Walking into a bedroom only to be greeted by a stale, sweaty sock smell isn’t exactly welcoming. This kind of odor can come from damp laundry, stale air, hidden socks under the bed, or even a neglected air conditioning filter. Whatever the cause, a quick freshen-up can make the space much more pleasant during your stay.
Start by identifying the source—check under the bed, in hampers, and behind furniture for any forgotten laundry. If the bedding smells stale, consider airing it out or changing the sheets if clean ones are available. Opening windows for fresh air circulation can also help, especially if the room has been closed up for a while.
For lingering odors, sprinkle baking soda on carpets letting it sit for 15–30 minutes before vacuuming, and spray Glen 20 of fabric surfaces like mattresses or curtains. A small bowl of vinegar or activated charcoal placed in the room can help absorb stubborn smells over time. If the air conditioning or heating system is in use, check if the filter needs a clean—it’s a common but overlooked cause of musty air.
A fresh-smelling bedroom makes all the difference in feeling comfortable and at home during a house sit, and a few quick fixes can turn a stale space into a much more inviting retreat.

Problem-Solving Hacks
DIY fixes, Natural solutions, Pro cleaning tips
Quick Fix for Water Rings on Wood
Gently rub a small amount of toothpaste (non-gel, white) into the water ring with a soft cloth. Buff it out, then wipe away any excess. The mild abrasives in toothpaste can lift the ring without damaging the wood. Finish by applying furniture polish to restore shine.
Keep Your Shower Clean
Spray a mixture of white vinegar and water on shower tiles once a week to prevent soap scum buildup. Wipe with a microfiber cloth for a sparkling finish.
Tidy Up Wrinkled Clothes
Hang your wrinkled clothes in the bathroom while you take a hot shower. The steam will help release the wrinkles, leaving your clothes looking fresh without needing an iron.
Revive Dry Skin
For a quick, at-home remedy, mix olive oil with a few drops of lavender oil and gently massage into dry skin. It moisturizes and soothes while leaving a calming scent!
Freshen Up Stale Towels
Soak your towels in a mixture of baking soda and vinegar before washing. It helps to eliminate any musty or stale odors, leaving them smelling fresh.
Fix a Broken Zipper
If your zipper gets stuck, rub a bit of lip balm or candle wax along the teeth to make it slide more easily. This can save you from having to replace the zipper entirely!

TV Streaming Issues
The Wi-Fi is unreliable, or the TV is an older model with no smart capabilities, making it difficult to stream content.
Bring your own portable Wi-Fi hotspot or use a mobile hotspot plan to improve connection speeds. Plus, use an HDMI cable or a streaming device like Chromecast, Roku, or Fire Stick to “smarten up” a non-smart TV, enabling you to stream your favorite shows and movies seamlessly.
